11.03.19 ~ ”How We Should Pray,” Matthew 6:5-15 Read Matthew 6:5-8… Nowhere in the NT is a prayer used
in a repetitious or ritualistic manner.
Matthew 6:9, “Pray, then, in this way:” To Whom, for What, and How to pray.
Matthew 6:9b, “Our Father who is in heaven,” Father of all in Christ (John 1:12-13; Galatians 3:26).
Matthew 6:9c, “Hallowed be Your name:”
He is Holy (Colossians 3:17, 23-24; 1Corinthians 10:31).
Matthew 6:10, “Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
God wants to save (1Timothy 2:3-4; 2Peter 3:9-10). God wants obedient and willing hearts (Romans 12:1). Sin and Satan appear to be winning, but(2Peter 3:3-7;
Matthew 25:41; Revelation 20:10, 15).
Matthew 6:11, “Give us this day our daily bread.”
Bread is symbolic of what we need for our physical and spiritual needs. Jesus is the bread of life (John 6:35-41).
Jesus is God’s Provision – daily, not weekly, monthly or yearly, but daily; and often it is moment by moment.
Matthew 6:12, “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”
Sin is our greatest enemy; forgiveness is our greatest need (Joel 2:32; Acts 2:21; Romans 10:13; 1John 1:8-10).
Because the Father is forgiving, His children are also to be forgiving (Ephesians 4:32; 5:1-2).
Matthew 6:13a, “And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
God tempts no one, but He does allow us to be tested (James 1:13-14; 4:4-10).
We ask God to help us not give in to sin (1Corinthians 10:13; Romans 12:9). God has provided all we need for victory (2Timothy 3:16-17; Romans 12:2; 2Peter 1:3-4).
Heartfelt forgiveness of toward others, illustrates that we have received God’s forgiveness ourselves.
Matthew 6:13b [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.] *Although not found in earlier manuscripts, this is indeed biblical.
1Chronicles 29:11-13, “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O Lord, and You exalt Yourself as head over all. Both riches and honor come from You, and You rule over all, and in Your hand is power and might; and it lies in Your hand to make great and to strengthen everyone. Now therefore, our God, we thank You, and praise Your glorious name.”
Matthew 6:14-15, “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.”
God paid the penalty for all sin, on the cross, to-day cleansing from sin that corrupts us, and in order to that we stay intimate with God.
God disciplines us when we disobey, so, we confess our sins (cf 1John 1:9) in order to receive dad-to-day cleansing, like washing our hands after contact with something dirty, although the rest of our body is clean.
An unforgiving spirit is inconsistent with one who has been forgiven (Matthew 18:21-22), Peter asked, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus *said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.”
Our prayers are to exalt God’s Name, Kingdom, and Will, while expressing thanksgiving for everything we need, now and forever, through Jesus Christ, the Lord.
God is good, all the time; all the time, God is good!
