(Questions and Scriptures for further study)
What is a disciple?
Before the resurrection of Jesus, what did His disciples do? What does it mean when we call ourselves disciples of Christ?
Read Matthew 28:16-18.
Who is Jesus addressing in this passage? How did the disciples respond to being in the presence of Jesus? Why do you think Matthew mentions their doubts? What authority has been given to Jesus? Read Daniel 7:13-14. Who gave Jesus His authority? Jesus commonly used the title Son of Man to refer to Himself. What was he saying in doing so? How does the authority of Christ relate to the command He is about to give to His disciples? What does this tell us about how we should go about this task and exactly what we should teach and who we should rely on?
Read Matthew 28:19.
What is the significance of the “therefore?” What is the point of the word “go?” Read Mark 16:15, Luke 24:46-49, John 20:21, and Acts 1:8. Every gospel and the book of Acts records Jesus sending His followers to share the Gospel with the world. What keeps us from going? Read Matthew 24:14. What does the faithful proclamation of the gospel have to do with the end times? What does it mean to make disciples? What kind of disciples are we to be making? What or whom should the disciples we make look like? What is the purpose of baptizing them?
Read Matthew 28:20.
What are we to be teaching new disciples? What are some things Jesus commands? Jesus spent three years discipling a group of twelve. Paul seems to have done more individual disciple-making. Some experts say discipleship is most effectively done life-on-life. Others recommend some form of small groups. What should teaching them look like? What is your learning style? What do you think would work best for you?
Read Matthew 28:20
When is Jesus with you? How does that relate to the mission He has given you?
What personal needs has the Holy Spirit exposed during this study?
How can we pray with you about those needs?
Consider memorizing Matthew 28:19-20.
